Saint John, Canada
Located on the historical Carleton Martello Tower site, Wave Break Market revitalizes and gathers the local community around views that overlook Saint John. The design of the steel canopy is inspired by those very views.
The trusses would be under the AESS 2 category for having feature elements that are to be viewed from a distance. Since a steel mesh is draped under the trusses, the public that is under the canopy would not be able to see the trusses, especially the ones directly above, however visitors that are on top of the hill would see the exposed structure, thus AESS 2 provides good welding practices that can be viewed at a distance while also being cost effective. The exposed steel that is near the ground may need to be changed to an AESS 3 category since it is reachable to the public. The smoother quality of AESS 3 makes the welded parts more pleasant to see and touch.
Arches and beams:
Arches and beams would be under the AESS 4 category due to its unique geometries that would need to be custom made. A smooth welding finish is also desired for the arches because of its close proximity to viewers who can see and touch them.
